ASTRAL Futures Fund
Friday 28th Aug Inspiring the next generation of astrophysicists, scientists and STEM leaders.To many young people, modern science can feel distant, intimidating, even out of reach — the preserve of a select few. ASTRAL exists to change that.
ASTRAL — Astrophysics, Supercomputing, Technology, Research Analytics and Leadership — is a flagship Swinburne initiative that builds a cohort of STEM student leaders who both act as role models and take part in genuinely cutting-edge research. Students learn the rigour of the scientific process alongside real skills in astrophysics, supercomputing, technology and leadership, becoming scientists, communicators, programmers and role models for the generation behind them.
The work sits at the frontier. ASTRAL is anchored in Swinburne's Centre for Astrophysics & Supercomputing and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav), and it's bringing astrophysics to life through the Swinburne Virtual Universe — a 3D immersive environment that lets anyone explore the cosmos, from our solar system to distant galaxies. Ranked among the top 1% of universities worldwide, Swinburne is helping ensure Australia remains a leader in astrophysics, supercomputing and virtual education.

The ASTRAL Futures Fund focuses on five key pillars:
MilliPhede PhD Programs — a three-week, PhD-style research project designed for high school students, giving them a real taste of scientific discovery.
ASTRAL Life-changing Grants — Support that opens ASTRAL to students who might otherwise miss out.
Swinburne Virtual Universe — a 3D immersive environment that makes complex astrophysics accessible and engaging, from the solar system to distant galaxies.
Cadet Scholarships — Scholarships that create pathways into astrophysics and STEM study.
Research opportunities — hands-on involvement in cutting-edge astrophysics research alongside world-class academics.
